Gone are the days when a manicure meant just a clear coat, or non color, such as Ballet. Of course Nude + the Classic French Manicure always look right. But now there are so many more compelling options. Experiment...go a little bit MAD.

How lucky am I to have Sarah, Style Sleuth Extraordinaire + dear friend give me a tour of all her favorite haunts in the East Bay + SF. Her discerning list included Erica Tanov, The Gardener, The Voyager, MAC, Tail of the Yak and if there was time pop into the De Young to view the Gaultier Exhibit. Next MAC, short for Modern Appealing Clothing, one of Sarah's favorite. And for very good reason. When we arrive she is greeted like the Rock Star she is, by MAC owners, brother + sister, Ben + Chris Ostipal. Many quarters, energy + an insatiable love of design + discovery is needed for a day sleuthing with Sarah. Sadly we did not make the Gaultier Exhibit...another time.
One's hair is said to be one's best accessory. And this season that accessory is red. What a breathe of fresh air from all the blonde wannabees, play it safe brunettes + super trendy pink or blue dos. Perfect red hair has the perfect pitch. Just enough impact but stopping short of contrived. Strong enough to stand up to a black leather suit or imbue extra cool to a color block outfit. Proof the two lovely ladies photographed at the Fall 2012 RTW Shows. The best place ever to sniff out what is new before it arrives at a Starbucks near you.
A wise editor once instructed me, when I was a young assistant at a one of my first shows, to take it all in. The hair, makeup, length of the skirts, width of the trouser, height of the shoe. So much to see + absorb. Love when a fresh runway look is easy to recreate like the faux bobs below. No fuss, no muss just tuck those locks into your scarf or sweater... I adore this, edgy but easy to create look of the loosely wrapped ponytail shown at Herve Leger. Hipster elegant at it's best.. Love the clean face with strong brow as well. More on brows in the post below.
I started out in life with brows like this or even thicker. Seriously I was about 10 hairs away from having a uni-brow. Through the highways + bi-ways of brow trends, I can unequivocally state Thick is Better. New York's Spring 2012 runways, eyebrows were groomed, thickened, and penciled in becoming the focal point of the face. The brows on Donna Karan's runway (above. Makeup artist Charlotte Tilbury, inspired by Yasmin LeBon's brows, a popular model in the late 80, kept a well defined brow using both pencil and powder in short, quick strokes. For us mere mortals without the benefit of an in-house make-up artist, minimal waxing followed by a brow tint seems to do the trick...
